- 'World of Warcraft': Best Decade
- Dec 24,2009
So here are picks for the top 10 video games of the 2000s.
1. "World of Warcraft" (Blizzard Entertainment, PC, 2004): "WoW" has set the standard for massively multiplayer online role-playing games. Like it or not, you can't deny its impact: 11 million people willing to pay $14.99 a month. I'm still playing it after five years. That says something.
2. "Resident Evil 4" (Capcom, GameCube/PlayStation 2, 2005): "RE4" rejuvenated the series, making controls that worked and super-fast, super-scary not-zombies. Plus, there's a guy with a chain saw. Run!
3. "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" (Rockstar Games, PS2, 2004): Really, I could have picked any of the "GTA" games after "GTA III." But "San Andreas" was impressive for its sheer size and breadth of features.
4. "Halo: Combat Evolved" (Microsoft, Xbox, 2001): "Halo" single-handedly helped the Xbox break into the market. Today, Master Chief is a pop culture icon.
5. "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" (LucasArts, Xbox/PC, 2003): "KotOR" is an example of the right way to do a role-playing game: deep, branching gameplay and a heck of a twist.
6. "Rock Band 2" (MTV Games, Xbox 360/PlayStation 3/Wii, 2008): "Guitar Hero" may have introduced the mainstream to the music/rhythm genre, but "Rock Band 2" perfected it.
7. "The Sims" (Electronic Arts, PC, 2000): I spent many of my college years simulating life instead of studying. Who knew the concept would be so fun?
8. "Uncharted 2: Among Thieves" (Sony, PS3, 2009): "Uncharted 2" takes the term "cinematic" to a new level. Add in fantastic, funny characters and great action, and you've got an instant classic.
9. "Final Fantasy X" (SquareSoft, PS2, 2001): "FFX" moved the "Final Fantasy" series forward by adding voice acting. It also made me cry, and I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for it.
10. "God of War" (Sony, PS2, 2005): Kratos takes on the Greek gods in his quest for vengeance. An epic tale, "GoW" set a standard for every action game after it.
